STAGE PERFORMANCE TIPS FOR SINGERS

How to give the best performance on stage

Stage performance tips for singers. Performing on stage is one of the most important parts of being a singer. Knowing how to make your stage performance match up with your vocals and song is essential too. So here are some tips that should help your improve your performance.#

MAKE THE MOST OF THE STAGE

One way to improve your performance on stage is to use the whole stage. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to walk over every inch of it, but make use of it. Your performance is not only about your voice. Whether you’re stood with a mic stand or handheld, you can still move around more at the upbeat parts or even use your arms to highlight emotional parts of the song. Getting close to the front of the stage helps connect to the audience.

KNOW HOW TO USE A MICROPHONE

The microphone is the most important prop during your performance, so having a good microphone technique can change your performance massively. A few key things to remember when using a microphone are:

  • Keep the microphone around 2-3 centre metres from your mouth for best projected sound. If you are inconsistent with this the sound of your vocal to the audience will just go up and down according to how close the mic is to your mouth.
  • Don’t point the head of the microphone towards the speakers; it makes that horrible feedback sound that everyone hates.
  • Bring the microphone closer to your mouth for softer parts of the song and take it further away from your mouth for a powerful part to project effectively. Of course this takes practice to get the timing spot on.

CHOOSE A MEANINGFUL SONG TO YOU

Caring about the meaning behind the song you’re singing improves your performance as you can add more emotion. Even if you chose to do a cover of a song, chose a cover that means something to you, or one that you can relate to the lyrics of. It’s priceless how effective emotion can be for your performance.

REMEMBER TO SMILE

It may sound silly but even just looking like you’re enjoying the performance can help to improve it. Even the most emotional songs still have areas of opportunity for you to show you’re having a good time. The most important reason to smile is because by showing you’re enjoying yourself often rubs off on the audience too and they have a good time watching you.
