Southampton talent auditions: National talent competition TeenStar came to Southampton this weekend. With auditions taking part at The Engine Rooms, Southampton saw promising singers audition in front of music industry judges.

Sophia Pulizzi – You were vocally confident with a really good tone and nice presentation. This was a really catchy original song which had great lyrics and a strong start to it. Romeo Bark – This was nicely sung; you have a lovely voice with a lot of power in. Now look to add expression, eye contact and performance when you’re singing. Click here for tips on facial expressions and gestures while singing. It might be an idea to film yourself singing and use this to look back and analyse your gestures.
Deborah Matthews – You have a great voice but it is really important that you warm up fully before performing as not doing so can lead to you sounding under strain. Harriet Wintle – You have a nice vocal tone and this was a lovely song choice. Performing on keys is completely different and although you are static you need to ensure you use all other tools at your disposal. Abbie & Rachel – This song has potential and you have a lovely tone, but now need to work on your vocal projection and interaction with each other. Make sure you always keep performing even when you have forgotten the words.
Issy Rose – You have a beautiful husky voice but now need to work on your breath control. Click here to find breathing exercises for singing. There is a lovely tone to your voice but it is really important to pick songs that you can keep under control. Click here for more on good audition songs.
Rachel Stroud – This was a wonderful song choice and sensitive playing on the keys. You had a beautiful lower husky tone then up to clean silky high notes. Rea – You had a good image with lots of expression and interpretation. Vocally you look to have developed with a lot more character in your voice. Don’t ever stop and apologise when performing as it just highlights the mistake you may have made. Jade Middleton –You were vocally strong and have a rich, warm voice. Just make sure to take care that you don’t get shouty in places. This advice on vocal techniques for singers will help you address this. It was a good idea to perform with a guitar backing.

Danielle Kidd – You had good phrasing and diction with a nice tone and rasp in your vocal. Now you would benefit from starting to think about stage persona and image. Click here for some advice on music synergy and image.
Olivia Davies – You had a strong start to the song, with very clear diction and a powerful voice. You were a little pitchy in parts and could improve your performance by including more dynamics. Click here for more advice on music dynamics.
Calvin Glen – You are very charming and always have a good connection emotionally to the music. Your voice is maturing and getting richer; now you would benefit from bringing more dynamics to the performance. Click here for more advice on music dynamics.
Tia Grosvenor – This is a very difficult song to sing acapella but you have good potential and delivered it well. Make sure to watch your facial expressions as sometimes you are coming across a bit harsh; perhaps film your performance which will allow you to review and refine it. Lauren Summerville – You have a lovely smile and this was a very smooth, listenable performance. The song has real potential but you must look to create an emotional connection when performing in order to convey the song’s message to us.
