HOW TO GET PUBLICITY FOR SINGERS

How to get publicity for singers: So you’ve got some good songs under your belt, you have a few interesting gigs coming up, but you want more people to know about what you’re up to. Using local press to promote is paramount, but there’s an art to make sure that firstly you secure that interview or newspaper feature, and secondly that you get the most out of that opportunity. Here are our best tips on how to get publicity for singers!

How to get publicity for singers: Be prepared!

The first tip on how to get publicity for singers - don’t rush in there. Before you make that phone call or ping in that email to the local journo think about what you are trying to sell. ‘I’m a singer - can I get on your radio station please’ is not the way to go. You need a story or as journalists will say ‘an angle’. That could be a festival gig or an EP launch for example. In the case of radio interviews you’ll need to have songs recorded that you would be happy have played out to thousands of people, after all it doesn’t do anyone any good if you can’t broadcast something that accurately represents your sound.

How to get publicity for singers: Putting together a press release – You’re ready to make that phone call but you’re going to need something to back up what you’re talking about and something that explains ‘the angle’ for a feature in your local paper or on a radio station. Writing a press release might sound easy but it’s important it’s written in a way that will get the attention of the people you need to get onside. Some good ideas to include in your press release are:

  • A punchy opening paragraph – hit the reader straight away with something interesting, relevant and eye-catching. Maybe include in there a quote from someone influential who’s seen you play before. Get to the point in the opening paragraph and address why you are getting in touch.

NO! Joe Bloggs has a new E.P and will launch it at The Dog and Duck next week.

YES! Described as ‘the best thing to come out of Norwich for years’, Joe Bloggs is set to launch their debut EP at what’s set to be a packed-out Dog and Duck next week.

  • Your press release should also include details of what you have been up to recently (as long as it’s interesting).
  • A brief biography of your act but don’t babble on. This will be lost on the journalist who may use this for background information in an interview but in the first instance doesn’t need verse and chorus on each member of the act.
  • Quotes. As above good quotes are eye-catchers. They give your press release more credit. If someone else is saying you’re good then it backs up your claim!
  • A picture. You could have this at the top of your press release otherwise attach it along with the press release in an email.
  • Your contact details. They need to be able to get in touch with you in all manner of ways so get all your social media I.D’s on there as well as your phone number and email address. This should be at the very end of the email normally below the word ENDS to alert that anything below this is not part of the press release. Some journalists are lazy and will just copy and paste the press release without checking through, and you don’t really want your phone number pasted all over the internet (do you?)

How to get publicity for singers: Make sure it stands out - Your press release will be one of hundreds if not thousands to drop in the recipients email address that day and they may only have time to skim read it, so make sure all the vital information is in the opening paragraphs. Don’t wait for the final line to say ‘and we’ll also be supporting Metallica at Wembley Arena later in the year’. It’s not a story with a narrative, get the headline in straight away!

How to get publicity for singers: Do your research – As above a journalist will get hundreds of emails each day all from people trying to sell their story to them. They can’t possibly go through all of them so your email needs to stand out from the crowd. Another tip on how to get publicity for singers is to always take the time to call up the newspaper or the radio station and ask to speak to the relevant person. Get their name and check you have the right email address for them (you may already know this, but it gives you a chance to introduce yourself and they may remember your name when that email drops). You can then ring them again to check they’ve received the release OK (what you’re actually doing here is giving them a nudge to say do something with it!). Other tips on how to get publicity for singers include addressing them properly, most of their emails will start with ‘hi there’, if it starts with ‘Hi Paul’ you’ve won the first battle and they’ll at least read on to see what the email is about.

How to get publicity for singers: Hassle them! – Keep on their backs until you get a straight answer on whether they plan to do anything with your press release. Get the balance correct between annoying them and seeming keen and on the ball and they will eventually give you a chance. Journalists will never admit they can be influenced or persuaded, but they’re just like any other human being at the end of the day!

The music industry is a business and like any business making contacts and networking is a vital part of it. A good tip on how to get publicity for singers is to make sure you are inviting your press contacts to your EP launches and your gigs. Keep them onside and the next press release might not take quite so much effort.

How to get publicity for singers: Build a portfolio – Keep your newspaper clippings and radio interviews. As with anything social networking is vital so tweet and post on Facebook every bit of press you get, and ask your other contacts to give it a retweet for you. It may seem insignificant at the time but the more times your act name flashes up here, there and everywhere, the more chance you have of people going to your next gig with the thought of ‘I’ve heard of them, they must be good’.
